Who Can Benefit from Dental Veneers?

Who Can Benefit from Dental Veneers?

Who Can Benefit from Dental Veneers?

Veneers, also called dental porcelain laminates, are thin shells made from durable, tooth-colored material. They are applied to the front surfaces of teeth to create an attractive and uniform appearance. Dental veneers are bonded to your natural teeth; they can alter tooth color, shape, length, and width. Teeth veneers can be made from porcelain or resin composite material. Both options have pros and cons. A resin veneer is thinner and doesn’t require as much alteration of the natural tooth surfaces. Porcelain is more resistant to stains and reflects light in a more natural way. Your dentist can tell you which veneer material is best for you.

Who Benefits from Dental Veneers?

The veneer process can correct a number of common aesthetic dental problems. Many patients who have discoloration from root canals, food and drug stains, resin fillings, or excessive fluoride exposure can enjoy the beautiful teeth that dental veneers create. Other good candidates are patients with worn, cracked, or chipped teeth. Uneven, irregular, or misaligned teeth or gaps between teeth can also be corrected.

The Procedure: What to Expect

Impressions or x-rays of your teeth may be necessary before placing dental veneers. Once a treatment plan is made, your dentist will prepare your teeth and place the veneer material. A small portion of each tooth surface equal to the thickness of the veneers will be removed. Your dentist will then make an impression of the newly treated tooth and send it to a laboratory where your veneers will be created. When they are returned, your dentist will test and alter them to ensure a perfect fit and color. After your natural teeth are cleaned, polished and roughened to help create a strong bond, the veneers will be attached with special light-activated cement. Finally, excess cement will be removed and any final adjustments made. You may be asked to return for a follow-up visit to check the fit of the teeth veneers. Most veneer placements go smoothly, but if you are concerned or have specific questions, talk to your dentist.
