Dental Insurance Plans: Are the Benefits Worth the Cost?

Although dental health plays a critical role in maintaining good general health, many who desperately need professional dental care don’t have dental insurance plans. The National Association of Dental Plans reports that just over 126 million Americans don’t have any type of dental coverage—that’s three times more than the number of people without standard health insurance. Because of steep out-of-pocket treatment costs, many Americans simply ignore dental problems instead of seeking care.

Dental Insurance Trends Over the Years

In 1995, the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System survey, conducted by the Centers for Disease Control, found that 44 percent of participants reported having no dental insurance coverage. By 2012, the number of uninsured Americans only had dropped to 42 percent.

Since the late 2000s, the insurance industry has suffered due to rising healthcare costs, economic weakening, and reluctance of employers to provide dental insurance plans for employees. Under recently instituted healthcare reform laws, children and adults are not required to purchase dental insurance, but some states offer bundled or separate dental plans through the Health Insurance Marketplace. Currently, 97 percent of dental benefits are provided through separate dental coverage policies that offer comprehensive preventative care benefits, but only partially cover major treatment expenses.

Dental Care Options for the Uninsured

If you cannot obtain coverage through your employer, the private market, or subsidized plans, finding affordable dental care can be a challenge—but there are options. As the number of people who are unable to afford routine dental visits has increased, so has the number of dentists. This is good news for patients who are without dental insurance, because dentists are working harder to find ways to make their services more affordable. Most dentists today offer or accept savings plans, and many are now offering new-patient specials that include free first visits and discounted treatments. Some dentists even offer in-house or third-party financing with reasonable payment options.

Although the cost of routine dental care can be expensive, it is essential to visit the dentist every six months. Remember, preventative care is much more affordable than putting off dental problems until they require treatment.
