History of Manassas, VA
Manassas, VA was founded in 1853, 35 miles southwest of the nation’s capital, and was the site of several historic events. Especially during the American Civil War.
During the Civil War, the first battle of Manassas took place in July 1861 and is considered to be the first major land battle of the war. Though at the time, Manassas was more or less just a railroad crossing. Then, between August 28-30 of 1862, the second battle of Manassas took place and both battles were considered Confederate victories. However, even though the Confederacy was able to claim both battles, the Union held control over the Manassas area for the majority of the Civil War.
After the war concluded, the railroad crossing continued to grow and was eventually incorporated as a town in 1873. It grew so much, in fact, that it was officially designated the official seat of Prince William County in 1894. Then in 1975, Manassas was incorporated as an independent city.
