Tooth Crowns in Virginia

Are you looking for a way to repair your damaged teeth? Then, perhaps you should consider a tooth crown. Learn more about this effective dental solution below.

What Are Tooth Crowns or Tooth Caps?

A tooth crown is a little cap that gets placed on top of a tooth that’s damaged or placed over a dental implant. Their resemblance to a small cap has led dentists to also call them caps. These appliances are recommended if you have a tooth that is decayed, damaged, fractured, or injured to the point that a filling will not suffice. A crown is also used to improve the appearance of teeth that are misshapen or discolored, as well as to keep a bridge secure, or as protection after a root canal. A crown’s adjustable color and shape ensures it will be completely unnoticeable and look much like your other teeth.

Do All Dentists Place Tooth Crowns?

Most of them do because the procedure is as routine as a root canal or filling. If you’re looking for a practice near you for a dental crown, call our office to schedule a visit right away.

Is There Only One Type of Crown?

No, the two primary types of crowns are ready-made temporary caps and customized, permanent caps. The temporary ones provide short-term dental protection while you are awaiting your permanent custom cap because they take a few weeks to create in a lab. The permanent caps are the ones you have for several years.

Will a Ceramic Crown Meet Your Dental Needs?

If you need a front tooth crown, then you should choose ceramic caps because the color more closely resembles the natural shade of a tooth than a gold crown tooth or a porcelain crown. The ceramic composition of these crowns stands up to daily wear. However, these crowns are also highly prone to breakage and demand that your dentist removes a minor bit of dental structure to ensure a proper fit.

Are Porcelain Crowns a Good Choice for You?

These dental caps are ideal if you want outstanding durability and strength in a crown. See, they have a metal core covered in porcelain, which makes them extremely strong and decreases your risk of leaks and returning decay. However, remember that a porcelain cap requires an even greater loss of natural tooth structure for placement.

How Does a Dentist Perform a Dental Crown Procedure?

In most cases, you simply come to our practice for two dental appointments a few weeks apart. The only time more visits are needed is if you need dental treatments to prepare your teeth for crowns. If you don’t, then you can expect the following steps:

  1. If you have enough healthy dental structure, our dentist will prepare your damaged tooth for a cap by filing it down.
  2. A dental impression will be made and sent to our lab for the fabrication of your permanent crown.
  3. A temporary crown will go over your damaged tooth while you wait for your permanent crown to be made over the next few weeks.
  4. You will come in for your second appointment when your permanent crown is finished and have it put on by our dentist.
  5. Your permanent crown will be adjusted to make sure that it’s comfortable and functional.

What Is the Average Price for A Crown?

The type of crown you select will ultimately determine your dental crown cost since some are made of more expensive materials. But luckily, many dental insurance providers and dental discount plans can help reduce your out-of-pocket costs because they cover some of the total expense. How Should You Care for Crowns for Teeth?

Very little maintenance is required to keep crowns in good shape. All you need to do is brush at least twice a day, floss gently on a daily basis, and visit our office for dental cleanings and exams every six months. By practicing these basic oral hygiene tactics, a tooth cap can stay strong and attractive for close to 40 years.
